The question we receive most about safety gear is “what is the difference between N95 masks and KN95 masks? I’ll make it easy on you and give the short answer right off the bat. N95 are American made masks and KN95 are made in china. However, there are some important things to consider before you decide which model is right for you. The main purpose of both of these mask types is to protect yourself against compromised air quality, and they BOTH do just that.

difference between n95 masks and kn95 masks

First off, I want to talk about the differences between the two respirator masks. The main difference is the mask fit test. The KN95 has to be put onto a human and test less than < 8% leakage. The N95 mask does not require this test. Another key difference is how the mask is secured on your head. The N95 mask has an around the head strap attachment, where the KN95 masks have ear loops. Lastly, you can refer to the chart to see the performance of both masks, but the N95 mask tests slightly about the KN95 in breathability. Most experts agree that the difference in the ability to breathe is undetectable by the person who is wearing the mask. Only a couple vendors are approved by the FDA for KN95 masks, so most, are not FDA approved. This means that these masks would not be cleared for medical use.

Now, for the similarities of the N95 and KN95 masks. Both masks block up to 95% of all airborne micron particles above .3 microns in diameter. So these masks do a great job protecting you against dust, viruses and bacteria. Overall, the look, the feel and the functionality of the masks are virtually identical.

The N95 masks and KN95 masks both accomplish the same goal of protecting the person wearing the mask from harmful airborne particles. They are much more similar than different.
