Do diamond blades have real diamonds in them? The answer is simple, NO, they have synthetic or man made diamonds. This is a little embarrassing, but I thought that diamond blades had real diamonds in them for about a year into my tenure with Diamond King Tools. Give me a break, I was self taught on all things diamond tools. I honestly think most people assume that there are natural or real diamonds in the blades. It would make sense. Otherwise, why would we even call them diamond blades? Why not just call them something else? Synthetic Diamond Blades just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring material on the planet. When you’re faced with cutting incredibly hard surfaces such as concrete, brick, and stone, you will need something that can defeat those things quickly and efficiently. The diamond is by far the best option for this task. The next question is, why aren’t real diamonds used? If you had one guess to answer this correctly, what would it be? That’s right, they’re too expensive! Synthetic diamonds work perfectly for the cutting task, and also, are much more economical.

The way that diamond blades are made is a scientific process. The diamond segments are welded onto the steel core of the blade. The synthetic diamonds sit in a matrix that allows for certain kinds of cutting, concrete cutting, asphalt cutting, stone cutting etc. The diamond segments wear away the material being cut. Once the diamond segments give out during the cutting process, they loosen from the bond and the blade starts to love layers. Eventually, as the diamond segments wears closer to the steel core, it cuts poorly and needs to be replaced.

So, in closing, diamond blades do not actually have real diamonds in them, they have synthetic diamonds. So, that plan you have to steal a truck full of diamond blades and convert them into a diamond ring to propose to your girlfriend, will NOT work!
